OUR HISTORY

Founded in 1981 by local faith leaders and Milford Zeigler, Covenant House began by opening the only day shelter in Charleston, WV.

We’ve consistently advocated for the rights of all West Virginians to have access to shelter, food, and medical care, even speaking at federal Congressional hearings and filing an amicus brief to the West Virginia Supreme Court on this issue. We opened the only comprehensive residential and resource program in West Virginia for people living with AIDS and remained the sole residence in the state until 1995.

Over time, our work has expanded to include a food pantry, clothing closet, emergency assistance, and housing support.

OUR MISSION

Covenant House works toward a West Virginia where everyone has what they need to remain housed, fed, and healthy.

There are papers, folders, pens, a telephone, and personal items on the desk. In the background, there's a corkboard with photos and notes, a filing cabinet, a coat hanger with a jacket, and bottles of water.

There are large window panes, potted plants, and some furniture in the background, with a dark outdoor scene visible through the windows.

WHO WE SERVE

Since our founding, we have worked to support the rights and dignity of all people.

That commitment continues to shape our work today as we provide practical support, stable housing pathways, and access to care for our neighbors across West Virginia.
