BECKLEY MPOWERMENT PROJECT COORDINATOR

Current Opening

Covenant House, a non-profit social service organization headquartered in Charleston, WV, seeks an HIV-prevention specialist who will plan and manage its Beckley MPowerment program -- an HIV-prevention program targeting the Beckley area’s young gay/bisexual male demographic, ages 18-31.

 

This represents an excellent opportunity to build community among young gay men, provide outreach, educate the targeted group on critical health issues, and coordinate dynamic events in Raleigh County. 

 

REPORTS TO:            Covenant House Health Action Coordinator

 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:  Coordinate a community-level HIV prevention program by recruiting a core group of 12 to 20 young gay and bisexual male volunteers from the Beckley community. Support core groups efforts to design and carry out Mpowerment project activities to establish a process for diffusion of risk-reduction norms, i.e., those supportive of safer-sex behavior.

 

DUTIES:

  • Designing and conducting street, community, nightclub, and online outreach activities, including promotional materials.
  • Recruiting, training, coordinating, and empowering young men to become volunteer outreach workers for Mpowerment.
  • Assisting in planning and implementation of other activities and promotion related to the program.
  • Co-facilitating small group, safer sex workshops for gay/bisexual men.
  • Collecting and report monthly data.
  • Minimizing Covenant House exposure, liability, and risk on projects.
  • Tracking and reporting expenses on a bi-weekly basis.
  • Promoting racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic diversity.
  • Spreading messages about safer sex.
  • Assisting with review and evaluation all parts of the project, including own role in the project, and issues facing young gay and bisexual men.

 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

 

  • Relevant experience with demonstrated success required, such as experience in conducting street or community outreach, HIV-prevention service delivery, experience with HIV testing, knowledge of harm reduction, and/or behavioral theories and motivational strategies.
  • Ability to take a project from inception to finish by organizing resources, data, and people proficiently.
  • Emotional intelligence, charisma, and dynamic communication abilities.
  • Commitment to encouraging projects along to achieve significant results.
  • Understanding of HIV prevention
  • Understanding of community building
  • Knowledge of young gay and bisexual male demographic in Beckley
  • Leadership skills
  • High school diploma or equivalent.  Bachelor’s degree preferred.

 

EMPLOYEE STATUS:  Full-Time (40 hours per week) 

 

COMPENSATION:    $25,500 annually.  Covenant House offers a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, and vision benefits; a retirement plan; and paid time off.                                               

 

CLASSIFICATION:    Exempt

 

EMPLOYER: Covenant House is dedicated to working for justice by offering direct services for people in need while creating social change through advocacy and education.  Programs include a Drop-In Center (day shelter), food pantry, clothing closet, homeless prevention and rapid re-housing, housing programs for people with HIV/AIDS, technical assistance with federal benefits, public policy advocacy, and public health education programs.
